Microsoft interview Monochrome

by Matt Glavin 7:16 pm Thursday, 20 November 2008.

Hi, I’m Matt Glavin, Business Manager for Monochrome – I joined Monochrome in September of this year to be part of the Rich Internet Application space.  Part of my role for one of the UK’s leading RIA Agencies is to explore new avenues working with Alliance partners to maximise new business opportunities.  Monochrome joined the Microsoft Partnership over 12 months ago with the aim of working with some of the newest and most innovative technologies available today…

We’ve all heard about Silverlight & WPF technology and the pros and cons related, this new dynamic drive from Microsoft to utilise the UX delivery for their major product stack is proving to be an exciting ride for Monochrome.  Since joining the MS eco-system we’ve worked on a number of enterprise level opportunities to deliver applications in WPF & Silverlight – How?  Well we’ve identified the benefits of working with other MS partners who’s services compliment our own, it’s called the Design, Develop, Deliver methodology.  The basic principal behind this approach is to expand our ‘new business’ horizon by offering ‘more value’ to prospective customers.  Of course, one of the great benefits of building partner relations is you can share opportunities increasing your pipeline by 30-40% overnight….fantastic!

Anyway, Microsoft visited Monochrome last week to spend the day filming our business in full operation to demonstrate to other partners out there how exciting the fast developing market that is Rich Internet.  Myself & Niklas Richardson (Monochrome’s Technical Director) were asked to do an interview piece to discuss specifically UX (User Experience) and the benefits of using the Design, Develop, Deliver approach….all very interesting.  The video is yet to be released but there’s photo’s on our blog.

Monochrome are always open to discussing partner opportunities with other organisations, if you want to chat drop me an email or give me a call – my details can be found here.

I’m a PC!

Silverlight 2 drops!

by Neil Middleton 5:20 pm Monday, 13 October 2008.

Scott Guthrie has just announced that Silverlight 2 final will be available for download from tomorrow.

According to Microsoft, Silverlight has already been downloaded by 1 in four consumers worldwide which is a significant amount. Expect all of these installs to update to the latest version sometime over the next week.

This is a significant event as it not only marks a huge milestone for the Microsoft Silverlight Team, but it also marks the date that Flash finally got a true competitor after years of complete domination. While Silverlight 1.0 was released last year, it was mainly a video only version, with some JavaScript/AJAX support that lacked the true power of .net. With the release of Silverlight 2, Microsoft has introduced a cross-platform, cross-browser version of the .NET Framework.

Silverlight 2 allows web developers to create applications using any of the programming languages that are available in Visual Studio, including C#, VB.net, JavaScript, IronPython, and IronRuby.

Microsoft also announced a few other little tidbits of information not previously announced.  First up was backing from Microsoft for SoyaTec towards Eclipse plugin development for Silverlight, significant if you’re not traditionally a .NET developer or don’t want to buy Visual Studio. More information on this is available here.

Secondly, Microsoft are opening up the Silverlight / XAML vocabulary to help third party developer write tools for building Silverlight applications.

Lastly, Microsoft have developed a Silverlight control pack, containing loads of Silverlight controls ready for use.  Additionally, this is being released on the Microsoft permissive license on Codeplex, making it free and distributable.  This will be developed over time so expect some interesting things coming here.

We are exceptionally excited about Silverlight 2 here at Monochrome, so expect to see us posting a lot more information over the coming weeks.

Monochrome attends the Microsoft Executive Briefing

by Adrian Munn 4:41 pm Monday, 22 September 2008.

We had the pleasure of being invited to Microsoft in Redmond to be given an insight into the future Road map for Microsoft’s products, It’s not every day you get the opportunity to lift the lid on all the development goodies and new projects that the our friends in Redmond have up their sleeves and get to share this with a select few of high profile re-sellers. We sat and waited and for the next 2 days they didn’t disappoint. What’s more frustrating is that as much as I want to tell you all of the upcoming things that they have in store I am on penalty of death and NDA. As soon as I have the shackles removed from my ankles and the gag taken off my mouth your all be the first to know!!!
